I endeavor in my scientific exploits to be understanding rather than judgmental of the assertions of those who oppose my curiosity. The more you ask questions of your challengers, the more likely you are to accurately understand how they arrived at those assertions and what their weaknesses might be.

Well said. I think it can also show you the weaknesses in your own assertions, which can often help you refine them to become more solid going forward.

Yes. I took that approach when addressing critical issues raised by reviewers in my recent GSA paper publishing process. If an important detail is overlooked or misinterpreted, insure on the next round it is crystal clear.
