Never the naked city
I recently saw this short video from dumansky on YouTube and thought it had a nice little tip for meeting new folks. She says that when meeting a new person, remember “never the naked city, never the naked job”.
This means when someone asks where you’re from, saying “Marietta, Georgia” isn’t super helpful. When you say it, add just a bit more. For me, if it’s someone from the Atlanta area, I might add something about the “big chicken” or how the Braves recently moved into our county.
The same goes for your job. Rather than just saying “I own a marketing company”, I can add something like “we help companies get found online” or “we’re digging deep into AI to try to figure out where things are going”.
Just adding that little bit can help keep the conversation moving forward much more smoothly. Sometimes simply saying “Marietta, Georgia” is enough because their sister happened to live there 15 years ago, but that extra bit is often very helpful. Check out her full video for a bit more.
